What is Paint Protection Film

Updated: Dec 21, 2020

Paint Protection film also known as PPF or clear film is a thermoplastic urethane and is often self-healing, the film is applied to painted surfaces of new or used cars to protect the paint from stone chips, bug splatters, and minor abrasions. This film is also used on airplanes, RVs, cell phones, electronics, screens, motorcycles, and many other areas.

Where did it all start

it all started in 1960 when the US Department of Defense wanted to solve an issue they were having with helicopter blades. the blades were getting damaged by debris and shrapnel hitting the blade and damaging it.

So they got in touch with 3M to develop a solution to the problem that lightweight and easy to apply.

Urethane film

Today's automotive paint protection has developed into a high-Quality thermoplastic urethane film that is applied to the topcoat of vehicles. it can be colored or clear and with varying thickness.

PPF Advantages

The material used in PPF(paint protection film) is highly resistant to acid contamination and corrosion, it provides protection against bugs, bird dropping, mineral deposits, acid rain, and UV light coming from Dubai's hot sun.

PPF Disadvantages

  • Can Reduce shine of vehicle after some time

  • Has a tendency to start yellowing

  • when damaged need to be fully replaced

  • Not easy to do DIY

  • Most expensive paint protection option

PPF and Vinyl/Wrap

PPF is thinner and lighter than a vinyl wrap, PPF is usually clear and can self-heal.

Vinyl is heaver and non-transparent it is also easier to install, Wrap can be considered as protection but it is mostly as an aesthetic choice.
